Do you have Fortress locks or Castell locks? What is the difference? Trapped key interlocking systems are commonly known as "castle key" systems in Australia, and this is because Castle or Castell has become the generic name, much like Hoover and the vacuum cleaner.
The Fortress or H31 or L&F interlocks are the most common locks in Australia, and have been manufactured here for over 20 years. In most cases where customer's request "Castle" locks they really need H31 locks. If you do need Castell locks we can supply them, Castell is FSP's sister company
In order to make identification easier the pictures above and below, show the lock types. The Fortress H31 basic lock is shown in the image above. The mechanism is a radial pin tumbler type. Every H31 lock type has a dustcover, either standard, as above, or stainless steel. The lock code is stamped on the dustcover, and the lock (see above) The differ, or combination number is stamped on the inside of the dustcover. Both code and differ are stamped on the key.
The CODE is specified by the customer and in the identification number for the lock and key. The DIFFER is the combination number, and tells our locksmiths how to cut the key. We keep a database to match up customer CODES with our DIFFER numbers. When selecting a code is important to ensure that it does not already exist on site.
Castell produces two types of lock seen in Australia, please see the image below. The figure lock is the most common. It is shown on the left. The lock has a maximum of three letters/numbers, that are raised on the lock face. The key is square with the symbol/code engraved in the key. The Castell Q lock is less common, and has a disc tumbler mechanism. The symbol/code appears on the front of the lock as shown on the right.
